摘要：An image sensor and a focus detection device or distance detection device usingthe image sensor, wherein the accumulation time of the image sensor is controlled by acharacteristic value of the subject image signals without all subject image signalsproduced by the image sensor having to undergo analog-to-digital conversion. Theimage sensor includes a light receiving unit having a light receiving element. The imagesensor produces electric charges corresponding to light incident on the light receivingelement, accumulates the corresponding electric charges, produces a charge signalcorresponding to the accumulated electric charges and outputs the charge signal so thatthe charge signal can be provided to a device which is external to the image sensor. Acharacteristic value detection unit is also provided inside the image sensor which receivesthe charge signal from the light receiving unit, detects a characteristic value based on thecharge signal and outputs a characteristic signal corresponding to the detected

characteristic value. In this manner, the characteristic value is determined from an analogcharge signal before the charge signal is converted to digital form.
