Procedures

I. Pre-reading

China is a very big country. Do we speak the same language? Can we understand each other?

1. China is a large country where different dialects are spoken. Can you list some of them? Discuss in groups and ask some students to report the answer.

2. Is there anybody who can speak a dialect from other place? Ask some students to speak the dialects and others guess.

3. Do you think there are some dialects in English?

II. Reading

Fast reading 1. scanning

1). Do you know what Standard English is from the text? 2). What is a dialect?

2. Skimming: Read quickly to find the topic sentence for each paragraph.

Para. 1: There is no such a thing as Standard English. Para. 2: American English has many dialects whose words and expression_r_rs are different from “standard English”. Para. 3: Geography plays a part in making dialects. Detailed Reading 1)How many dialects of American English have been listed in the text? ( Para 2) The midwestern, southern, African American, and Spanish dialects. 2) Why does American English have so many dialects? (Para 2 & 3)

That’s because people come from all over the world. And geography plays a part in making dialects

Can you tell an interesting or funny story that shows great difference between dialects in Chinese/English?

Keys or kiss

A teacher was giving an English lesson to a class of adults. They had recently come to live in the United States. The teacher asked some of the students to give him the ruler, the book, the pen and so on. The students seemed interested in the activity(活动) until the teacher turned to an Italian and said, “Give me the keys.” The man looked surprised and somewhat at a loss(有点手足无措). Seeing this, the teacher thought that the student hadn’t heard him clearly, so he repeated, “Give me the keys.” The Italian shrugged(耸肩) his shoulders. Then, he threw his arms around the teacher’s neck and kissed him on both cheeks.

2. Believe it or not, there’s no such thing as standard English.

信不信由你,世界上没有所谓的标准英语。

believe it or not: 相当于一个副词,通常用于口语,意为“信不信由你,我说的是真的”。

Believe it or not, the lovely girl is a thief. 3.no such thing as… 没有…这回事

such…as…: 象…一样的…; 诸如…之类的…

Such students as you should have a bright future. I don’t like such a person as Mary.

4. expect : Vt. 期望,预料,认为,预期

usage: expect to do sth 指望/希望做某事 Sb be expected to do sth

expect +that-clause认为/预想…… 4. Expression n.词语,表达方式 ;表情,神情 5. play a part in 1)参加某活动.

She plays an active part in local politics(当地政治). 2)对某事有影响, 对某事起作用

She played an important part in the plan. 6. recognize

(猜词义) I recognized my old friend at once. 认出 recognize sb to be /as……承认….是…. be recognized to be/as……被承认为…… They recognized him to be/as a great leader. He was recognized to be/as a great leader.
