Questions 53-60

·Read this extract from a company report, written by the chairman of a computer manfacturing company , and answer questions 53-60 on the opposite page .

Results for Intersolve have been mixed in the last twelve months , giving us reasons to feel pleased , but also areas where we need to take effective action to avoid losing our world market position .

Despite global problems of cruuency rate changes , we have seen sales grow . Our new laptop model has certainly been the main reason for this growth . This is particularly encouraging , given the cuts we made in advertising . This is becarse we felt television advertising had become too expensive and we have in fact now got fewer staff in the advertising department.

We are involved in negotiations for a 10% share of Techtel , and it will be a huge advantage if we succeed , Our best result so far has been securing the Australiian account . While sales there may not be particularly high at present , this is a very good result and that is why we have felt prepared to see higher costs in the sales department . We are also interviewing for a new production manager to replace Mike Saville, who in retiring next month.

Looking now at the more negative aspects of the period there is a clear need to impuove in certain areas . While continuing generally to hold costs down , we also need to develop our ability in marketing . Without that , there is some danger of losing out to the competition, For this reason, extra staff are being placed in the trainging departmint so that we can build up our skills in marketing .

Competition both here and abroad continues to be strong and we need to keep active. Although our prices are lower, we don”t offer as many models as our competitors, despite actually operating from more factories. This is where marketing will help ,we will also increase the budget for the distribution network, so that the models we do offer can be delivered as effectively as possible to

sales outlets.

·For questions 53-56 , choose the correct answer. ·For each question, circle one letter A.B or C
