In 1993, a farmer on the edge of Exmoor (in the south-west England) had an unpleasant surprise. He discovered that a wild animal had killed more than a hundred of his sheep.

In the following years, there were many reports of a large

cat-like animal which killed sheep. People called the unknown animal 〝The Beast of Exmoor〞.

Many hunters tried to trap or shoot the animal but they all

failed. The wild animal was too clever and cautious (谨慎的). The government sent soldiers to hunt the animal for three months. They saw the animal and said that it was 2.5 metres long, about a

meter high, and weighed about 90-100 kg. Experts who saw it said that the animal was a puma (a type of mountain lion).

Then at the end of 1993, a farmer’s wife managed to take a

video of the puma, and it was shown on television. People, saw an animal the size of a leopard(豹), with a long tail. In 2002, a similar was seen by two policemen in a different part of England. There were other reports of pumas on moors ( 荒野). The police now think that they escaped from private zoos or a traveling circus(马戏团). The owners were unwilling to report their loss. They feared that farmers might seek compensation from them.

So far, the beasts have not attacked anybody--- perhaps

Doctor Seuss was born in 1904. By the middle 1950s, he’d become one of the best-loved and most successful children’s book writers in the world. His books are popular with young readers. They enjoy the invented words and the pictures of unusual funny animals and plants.

In 19, life magazine gave out a report about school children who could not read. The report said many children’s books weren’t interesting. Seuss strongly hoped to help children and decided to write books that were interesting and easy to read. He used words with the same ending sound, like fish and wish. He didn’t receive training in art. Yet, he drew the

pictures for most of his books.

In 1957, Seuss wrote The Cat in the Hat. He used less than 230 words to write the book and even a child who is only six years old could read it. It was a fun story and easy to read. Both children and their parents loved it. Today it’s still one of the stories they like best. The success of The Cat in the Hat made him want to write more books for children. In 1960, he wrote a book using less than fifty words. The book is called Green Eggs and Ham.

In 1984, Doctor Seuss won a Pulitzer Prize〔普利策奖〕. He was honored for the education and enjoyment his books provided American children and their parents.

He died at the age of 87, but his influence remains. Millions of his books have been sold worldwide. People say his books helped change the way American children learned to read. Yet, his books are loved by people of all ages. Doctor Seuss once said,

A fish that lives in America can live out of water for months at a time, similar to how animals got used to land millions of years ago, a new study shows.

The Mangrove Rivulus, a kind of little fish, lives in small pools of water. When their living place dries up, they live on the land, said Scott Taylor, a researcher in Florida.

The fish can grow as large as three inches. They group together and breathe air through their skin before they can find water again.

The new scientific discovery came during a trip.

〝We were travelling for fun and one day I kicked over a log〔圆木〕and the fish came out.〞 Taylor told reporters by telephone. He said he would make his study on the fish known to the public in an American magazine early next year.

In lab tests, Taylor said he found the fish can live up to 66 days out of water without eating.

Some other fish can live out of water for a short period of time. The walking catfish found in Southeast Asia can stay on land for hours at a time, while lungfish〔肺鱼〕found in Australia, Africa and South America can live out of water, but only in a not active way. But no other known fish can be out of water as long as the Mangrove Rivulus and keep active, according to Patricia Wright, a biologist at a Canadian University.

More studies of the fish may tell how animals changed over time.

〝These animals live in conditions similar to those millions of

years ago, when animals began to move from water onto land,〞 Wright said.

live out of water in a not active way.

D. The walking catfish found in Southeast Asia can stay on land

for hours at a time.
