In the past several hours they were not flying in the right direction. On the contrary they were actually making for the east. All the passengers fell in despair. Their pilot apologized to them. At first Uncle George got a shock but on second thoughts he suggested that their flying-off-course was actually a a whole-hearted invitation to New York in disguise. What he said gave great encouragement to the others. A short time later they entered New York. As they were sailing through New York harbor they had their first glimpse of the great statue of liberty, the symbol of freedom, which is located between long island and Staten island. They walked along the great bridges, enjoying the great ships in New York harbor. They went to Manhattan and they even visited the Empire State Building and the United Nations Building. Uncle George was pleased with the trip but Aunt Lucy was upset by the busy traffic. She said that fits of dizziness came over her whenever she glanced at the skyscrapers. She complained that there wasn’t single plot of land in New Yore that was quiet. She was anxious to go home but Uncle George would have insisted on staying for another few days but for a riot in front of an embassy. Some tourists from the South Pole protested against the foreign policy in front of the Embassy of Escalopia. They intended to set the Embassy on fire. Someone even fired a shot through the office window. There were dozens of ambulances and fire engines near the embassy. The Ambassador was bravely defended by his servant Host who aimed a fire extinguisher at the rioters. The Amabssador was irritated and threatened to break off diplomatic relation with the South Pole. Now that Uncle George and Aunt Lucy have returned home, Uncle George keeps on urging others to go New York. Aunt Lucy will comfirm that no one will regret traveling in New York.

Alice’s Rocket

One morning, Alice had no sooner finished delivering letters than she picked up the newspaper. Suddenly an advertisement attracted her attention. “The Exhibition at the Crystal Palace in Hyde Park”. She was so fanatical about the exhibition that she asked her mother for permission.

“I’ll take you to the exhibition providing that you wash up every day,” mother teased her.

To her mother’s surprise, Alice not only washed up every day in the following week but scrubbed the doormat as well. She volunteered to do jobs about the house. She helped her father put the basement in order. She even fixed a loose handle with a screwdriver. Eventually mother and Alice went to the exhibition. There were not only a great many goods sent from various parts of the world, but also a great deal of machinery on display. Steam boats carried thousands of visitors across the Channel from Europe. The exhibits gave Alice a deep impression. While wandering in the exhibition, she noticed a model rocket with a label which said,“made in Cape Canaveral.” The rocket was huge and took up a lot of space.

“ Mum，shall we buy this rocket？” “ It appears odd，” Mum replied.
