Unit 9 What does he look like? (Section B, 1a-1c) listening
Good morning/afternoon, my dear judges. I'm the 3rd candidate. It's a great honor to stand here and interpret my lesson to you. The lesson I’m going to talk about is “What does he look like”, the reading part. My presentation can be divided into 5 parts. They are the analysis of teaching material and students, teaching aims, key and difficult points, teaching procedures and blackboard design.
I Analysis of teaching materials
Firstly, I will talk about the analysis of teaching materials. This unit is chosen from PEP English book, the first semester of grade 7, section B, from 2a to 2c, the reading part. The topic of this unit is about describing people’s looks. After learning this lesson, students are able to use “what does she look like” to ask people’s appearance. And describe people’s personal traits in a more detailed way. In this passage, students are going to understand there must have some difference between what people really see and speak because our memory always cheats us.
II Analysis of students
Students in Grade 7 have strong curiosity and are enthusiastic to learn new things. After learning English for 4 years, they have accumulated some basic English words and expressions. Besides, since they are in adolescence, they already foster some awareness to pay attention to their own and others’ looks. By learning this unit, student can consolidate what they have learned past while describe people’s looks in a more detailed way by using more adjectives to narrow down the choices.
III Analysis of teaching aims
According to the New curriculum standard in English, teaching materials and students in my class, I set the following three teaching aims:
(1) Knowledge aims:
Students can master some word to describe people: “curly/ straight hair; heavy/medium build.” Students can understand the expression and usage of “what does she look like” . (2) Ability aims:
Students can find the main idea from fast reading and detailed information from scanning. Students can talk about people’s look properly and decently. (3) Emotional aims:
Students’ are able to care about their appearances and recognize people’s difference from looking. Students should learn to be polite to others by not judging others’ looks meanly. IV Analysis of teaching key points and difficult points
According to the analysis above, I set the key points and difficult points as follows.
Teaching key points are to master the spelling and the pronunciation of the phrases like “ blonde hair; small mouth; big eyes”.
1
The difficult point is how to use these noun groups in daily life and know how to describe people’s looks. V Analysis of teaching methods and learning methods
I’ll mainly use “communicative teaching method” and “task-based teaching method”. In this way, students can enhance their ability of solving problems by their own and their reading ability will be improved while finding detailed information in the passage .
In order to let students be the real host of the class. I will ask them to work in groups, which can make class more efficient and interesting.
VI Analysis of teaching aids
In order to draw students’ attention, power point and some pictures that are related to this lesson will be used, which can help me to enrich my class and make my student have a deeper impression of what they learned.
VII Analysis of teaching procedures Step 1 Warm-up and Lead-in
Firstly, I will greet my class with the sentence “How is everything going?”. And show them a video clip whose name is “Beauty and Beast”. After showing this video, I will ask them: “Do you know this story?Yes, a beautiful girl fall in love with a beast. Here is a screen shot of the beast. What does he look like? He is fluffy, tall and very scary. What about the girl? She is slender, beautiful and with smooth brown hair. Boys and girls. You guys are excellent observers. Do you know there is a kind of work which need to observe people and paint them to help the police to find the criminal? Are you interested in it? Let’s learn a new passage in Unit 9 , which is chosen from a piece of paper. In this way, I can lead my student into today’s passage. Because this movie clip is interesting and my students love cartoons, it will be easy for me to catch my students’ eye and make them more concentrate in today’s new lesson.
Step 2 Pre-listening
In this section, I will ask my students to look at some pictures with some phrases to describe it and ask the students to speak it out as quick as possible. Then they should finish 1b in the book to fulfill the blanks with the given words.
Step 3 while-listening
In while-reading step, I will ask my students to read at least for three time. In the first time, I will give them 3 minutes. Students should answer my questions: What is this material about? How many characters the two people are talking about?
If any group wants to answer the question, this group will get some stickers. In this way, students will act more actively to answer these questions. Then, in the 2nd listening: three tasks needs to be finished. a.What does Johnny Dean do? b. What does he look like? c. Please fill in the blank in 1c. (This question’s answer can be showed on the power point to save time if necessary.) Then ask student to read after the tape for the last time, and find out what do those pronouns mean in this passage. In the whole section, students ability of grasping

detailed information will be improved. What’s more. Listening to the tape can help them understand the conversation better, learn the intonation while listening and help teacher find and correct their defects in pronunciation.
Step 4 post-listening
In this section, the students will have a discussion to describe their group member’s looks and share their descriptions with the whole class. Then I will tell them people’s look are but the shallowest part. Just like the girl who married the beast, she loves him because he has a warm heart.
Then we will play a game: each group describe a certain number of famous person’s looks and one of their group member should guess. The group guess the most names will win the game. In this section, students’ ability of using language to describe others will be enhanced.
Step 5 summary and homework
In the end of my class, I will ask some students to summarize what we have learned in this class then I will add some if it is necessary. After class students should read the dialogue for at least three times and write a short passage about their family member’s look.
