Unit2

What is a real friend? Some people think that real friendship likes in generosity Some others think that a real friend is one with whom they can share happiness.

In my opinion, however, a real friend is one who is with you when you are difficulties. He is ready to offer you help whenever you need it, and gives his advice even if you don’t like to hear it. A friend in need is a friend indeed.

It takes a great effort to get a real friend. First, we should be kind and honest to others. Second, do not hesitate to offer our help when others need it. A sincere and frank person is never worried about finding a real friend

Unit4

Dear editor:

We have the problem of increasing waste in our city. Not only is food like rice and noodles abandoned on restaurant tables, but energy such as water and electricity is wasted as well. Many girls, perhaps for becoming more slender, throw their bread away in garbage cans as if the bread were responsible for their excessive weight. It is important for us to recognize the consequences of this problem.

Most of us have been taught that waste is bad, but few have ever wondered

actually how many trees have been destroyed simply for the packages of moon cakes.

I am calling for some rules to prevent waste of any kind. Besides, simple wrapping should be encouraged. Perhaps there will be a day when the world “many” would disappear from the dictionary.

Yours sincerely

Now here’s the weather forecast for the next 24 hours. In the North West and the North East of England, there’ll be some early morning mists and after that the weather will turn dry and sunny, but quite chilly, with temperatures around 6 degrees. It should stay dry all day with a lot of wind, so wrap up a bit colder than today.

And now the South West and Wale. You can expect some rain in the morning and afternoon. There might be some storms, as well, with thunder and lightning. Strong winds will visit these areas and so the temperature will be lower than today, around 3 or 4 degrees. I don’t think you’ll see much of the sun. Cloudy all day, I’m afraid.

Unit 7

Dear Mr. President,

I’d like to comment on our canteen service.

What’s I appreciate most about or canteen is its efficient service. In spite of the rush hours at lunch time, I never have to stand in a line to get my noodles. In addition, our canteen is good for the lower prices it charges. We always praise the friend fish or chicken after we look at our wallets

However, our canteen service would be perfect with a few improvements. The foods could be made less sweet. Besides, it is too noisy our canteen, if something can be done about it, we will surely have an ideal dining environment.

Thank you for your kind attention.

Yours Sincerely,

Wang Ling

Unit 9

The table shows clearly that different groups favored different holiday destinations in the city, although some were popular with all ages.

Gyms and night clubs were most popular with the youngest age group, that is, the 21-30-year-olds. However, the popularity of these activities declined noticeably with only 21% of 21-30-year-olds visiting them and 81% visitors of those over 51.

Similarly, zoos become popular with the increase of age; 49% of the over-50 group in contrast to 12% of 21-30-year-olds. Parks were most popular with the 31-40-year-olds went there in the similar numbers. Museums were not popular with any age group, but the interest in sporting events remained fairly steady at 29-22% in people from 31 to over-50 years old, rising to 43% in the group of 21-30-year-olds.

Shopping centers were clearly the preferred location for all age groups.

Unit 10

In modern society, people are having stressful lives due to severe competitions. But most of them still manage some times for entertainments. First of all, people need to get rid of stress to be physically and psychologically healthy. Once they do something for fun after work, they can relax their brains as well as their bodies. Then entertainments can also help them to handle their work problems. Sometimes a solution could suddenly occur while they are doing something they really enjoy.

Without entertainments, life can be totally different. People won't be as

efficient at work, they might eventually break down. At the same time, if they don't take time to relax, they won't be able to handle the family relationships properly.

On the whole, entertainments play an important part in our lives.

Unit13

Shopping is one of the ways some people spend their free time. They go shopping whenever they are free, and there seems always something fun to buy. Some women like to shop in clothing stores and shoe stores, while men like to do music shopping and enjoy going to the bookstores. Most people however like to do their shopping whenever and wherever there is a sale.

There’re also people for whom shopping is a necessity, not a pleasure. They'd rather take a walk in the sunshine or watch TV at home. They only shop when they have to. Some of them enjoy catalogue shopping either through phone or on line. In that way, they can both save money and time.

Unit15 There are still many people celebrating the Chinese New Year in a traditional way, despite the fact that they are now living in a modern society.

Although most of them have ceased pasting their doors with red-paper scrolls on which are written lucky words, they still hate breaking things and hearing unlucky words on New Year's Day.

Although in some parts of the country there is no sound of firecrackers, which in the old days, was believed capable of driving all kinds of evil spirits away, they can enjoy various kinds of celebrating programs from TV for fun. Now they tend to wish a Happy New Year to each other by telephone instead of by walking door to door.

This festival continues for six or seven days and is considered the biggest Chinese festival.

Unit 16

The Marsh House, a private house designed by Charles Adams and built in 1825 with beautiful gardens and 18 bedrooms is located in the historic district along the East Ocean Drive reachable by car, bus and train. By car, one drives from Route 495, takes Exit 12, and then goes east 3 miles on Route 17 to get there. There are connections by bus from New London, Providence, Boston and Fall River, and there are trains from New London and Boston stations several times a day.

The Marsh House is on the East Ocean Drive, the second house east of the museum, between the Reynolds House and the Austin House. There is a parking area opposite to it.

Unit 18

Unit19

Dear Thomas,

Sorry to hear that your parents are suffering from heart disease and you are much worried that you would probably catch the same disease. Actually there are plenty of ways to reduce the risk of having heart disease, especially by modifying

your lifestyle. Here are some heart-healthy steps you can take: eat more fruits and vegetables and

fewer processed foods and less fat; cut out cigarettes; exercise more (ideally, 30 minutes of moderate effort a day). But most important of all, you should always try to reduce stress and keep a good state of mind, because prolonged stress and depression can increase the risk of heart disease. So if you are depressed, get support or treatment as necessary. I’m sure you will be as healthy as I am if you adopt a healthy lifestyle.

Best wishes,

Wang Lin

Unit22

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to make a complaint about your poor postal service which puts me in a very difficult position.

I am a second year student in Liaoning University. Two months ago my mother sent me a parcel packed in a nylon bag from Beijing, which contains some winter clothes: a black overcoat, a brown sweater, and a pair of gloves. But two months has passed, I still have not received my parcel yet. I have to spend extra

money on winter clothes as I can hardly stand the cold weather here.

I sincerely hope that you we will give prompt attention to my case and settle it properly as soon as possible. I am looking forward to your favorable reply.

Yours sincerely

Unit24

Dear Mrs. Rossi,

You may remember that we have discussed the noise your children make while practicing their musical instruments. You agreed to make sure that they would stop practicing in the evenings.

But I’m astonished to find that nothing has changed and the situation is continuing as before. I find it difficult to stay in the house and I invent any excuse to go out for the evening to be away from the terrible noise.

I think it is high time you realized your responsibilities as a member of the community, and I must warn you that unless you do something about the situation I will

be forced to take legal action.

Yours sincerely,

Wang Lin

Unit26

Everyone faces the problem of choosing an occupation after graduation from college or university, which plays a vital role in his/her life. An appropriate occupation makes one work with zest and vigor as well as contribution to his/her country.

To make a wise choice, two important things should be taken into consideration. One is the interest, and the other, the demands of people and society. Only if the two aspects are connected can one show his/her talents and abilities to the best advantage. lf the two conflict with each other, the former should give way to the latter, for people's interests are more important than the individual's.

In regard to my choice in the future, I am fond of learning foreign languages; what's more, with the implementation of the openning up policy, exchanges between home and abroad in economy and culture have been growing significantly, thus I'm determined to be a qualified interpreter.

Unit27

Education is very important to all of us. Whatever we do or will be doing in the future, we should try our best to become educated people. The more educated we are, the more contributions we can make to the progress of mankind.

Education in terms of its stages, can be divided into preschool education, primary school education, high school education, and academic education. These stages are closely linked with one another. If one wants to be an educated person, he or she should make every effort to acquire knowledge and practice during each stage of studies.

To be an educated person is not easy. First, we should know clearly the purpose of education Second, we should be diligent and persistent, trying our best to overcome all the difficulty that we come across. Lastly, we should not only educate ourselves, but also help others as much as possible to acquire knowledge and skills. This is my understanding about education.

Unit 28

In modern society, science to human beings is like food to our bodies. it is science that frees us from the bondage of Nature, Fifty years ago when airplanes, cars, and steamers were in the course of development, man's life was not as convenient as today. So, science is our benefactor.

However, when science is wrongly used, its destructive power is uncontrollable and terrible. For example, atomic energy indeed can help us change

deserts into seas or remove mountains that we don't need, but it may also destroy thousands and thousands of lives in a split second. This reminds us of using science sensibly for our benefit.

As a famous scientist once said, we should study scientist to understand Nature instead of just mastering it. I believe, with more and more achievements made in science, it will be possible for us to realize our dreams.

Unit29

Dear Li Hua,

Thank you for sending me this dramatic and touching book. I have read it through and wish to communicate my thoughts to you.

I feel very sorry for the girl's unfinished schooling, for she had not been able to enter college until after 30, a dozen years later than you and me. But, one strongpoint that I think she developed from her experienced hardships was that she was quite persevering, and unlike many young people today, she did not easily give anything up.

The story taught me a lot about the particular time as the girl experienced. I've learned that something like training through hardships should still be enhanced today. But, on the other hand, things like the deprivation of the youth's schooling should never happen again.

Look forward to your reply.

Yours,

Wang Lin
