The Internet is an amazing modern tool, creating new ways to shop, entertain, and communicate. But one of the most unbelievable things the Internet is doing right now is helping people to discover their family histories.

While some Americans are lucky enough to know their family tree going back hundreds of years, most people only know of a few generations. However, new online services are changing that for many people.

Why should we care about our family history? For starters, most people who set out to research their roots find the experience interesting, exciting, and hugely rewarding. Chances are, there are many remarkable characters --- both heroes and villains --- in your family line. And you may even have relatives living close by that you didn't know about.

But, best of all, building and maintaining a family tree and understanding our ancestors’ experiences can provide meaning and continuity to our lives, while providing something priceless to pass on to the next generation.

So, what’s promoted this new craze? Billions of historical documents from city, county, state have been placed on the Internet where they can be easily searched and downloaded by anyone. And now there are new services that provide ordinary Americans a unique experience to organize their family histories, and share them with their family and friends.

The largest and most comprehensive of these services is called Ancestry.com.

Ancestry.com gives you access to all of the data you need. With more than one billion searchable digital records --- and thousands of new ones added daily --- it’s a key resource for your family history search. It shows you where to start your search, how to construct your family tree, and how to get past seemingly dead-ends in your hunt for information.

The service also provides an easy family-tree program so you can create and share your family tree with others. You can also access copies of many original records, such as birth and death certificates, newspaper clippings, and other fascinating public records about your family. These can be downloaded and printed, or even as replacements of original documents that you may have lost.

Another fun thing you can do using Ancestry.com is look up old newspaper clippings from 50, 100, or even 150 years ago that mention your family members. It gives you access to expert genealogists (家谱专家) who can help you if needed, and contains a wealth of articles on special topics such as researching African-American histories, military research, and more.

Ancestry.com offers subscription plans that are considerably lower than other online services offering this type of service. Best of all, Ancestry.com is currently offering new customers a free, 14-day trial. You can begin researching your family tree right away and see the amazing amount of information available through the service — all for free.

41. According to the passage, what is the most pleasing thing for building a family tree? A. Providing meaning and continuity to our lives

B. Finding relatives living close by that you didn't know. C. Learning something meaningful from your ancestors. D. Find many remarkable characters in your family line.

42. What makes it possible for people to search their family history at Ancestry.com? A. An easy access to large amounts of digital data.

B. People’s curiosity to learn about their family history. C. An easy family-tree program to build a family tree. D. People’s desire to organize their family history.

43. Which of the following is a unique experience that Ancestry.com will offer? A. You can download and print information you need. B. You can build and share your family tree. C. You can know about your family members.

D. You can learn about African-American histories.

44. What is the author’s main purpose in writing the passage? A. To help people learn about their family history. B. To show the importance of building a family tree. C. To encourage people to surf Ancestry.com. D. To offer new customers a free, 14-day trial.

Most people don’t get a lot of time off and when they do, they tend not to go away. I always ask my friends and former co-workers why this is and, almost typically, they always say it’s because they simply can’t afford to do so. Like most people, they see images of vacations on TV and internalize the commercials to believe that travel must be like what it is on TV and therefore must be expensive. The only alternative is backpacking around in twenty bed hostels (旅店)with shared showers and eating pasta.

But that is not really true. Travel can be very cheap. You can easily travel far and wide without breaking the bank.

Here are some tips on how to get travel cheaply: Airfare:

Since flying makes up one of the largest portions of someone’s budget, it’s important to find ways to fly cheap. Most cities have a smaller airport with lower landing fees. This saving is usually passed onto you and why budget airlines don’t fly into major airports. Moreover, book your flight 6-8 weeks in advance or look for last minute special deals. Buying your flight 6-8 weeks in advance ensures that airlines don’t have you over a barrel. If you book your flight too soon, then airlines know you need it. If you book too early, airlines have chances against rising costs and keep prices high. Accommodation:

I never stay in hotels unless Priceline can get me a rock bottom price. Why? They are never the cheapest (and sometimes the cleanest) option. Hostels cater to all ranges of travelers and are not simply for backpackers in 20 bed dorm rooms. Don’t overlook them if you can’t find a hotel deal. You can find hostels with private rooms, free Wi-Fi, free breakfast, showers, and TV for cheaper. And what about the cheapest one star hotel without Wi-Fi or breakfast? $110 per night. Who really wants to stay at a place like that! Sightseeing:

It’s important to do lots of research and visit the local tourist office. Don’t use a guidebook. Guidebook information is outdated and doesn’t give you any tips on current deals. I go to travel blogs, city tourism websites, Yelp, and Tripadvisor. These sites have the current information on what is good, bad, and on sale. Additionally, tourist offices also know the latest special events and usually have a few discounts available for visitors. Eating:

Eating out every meal is expensive. One way to save money is to eat out at big restaurants during lunch time as lunch specials offer a much better value than dinner. It’s nice to have a fancy dinner but a fancy lunch is just as good and much cheaper. Moreover, you can head to the supermarket and pick up some sandwiches. Supermarkets are a great way to find out what the local diet is about. What kind of meats do they like? Fish? Junk food? It’s amazing the variety of foods you can see on shelves that you don’t have back at home.

Saving money while you travel just requires you break out of the “travel is expensive” mindset. Locals don’t live for hundreds of dollars per day and you don’t have to either. Simply live like a local and you’ll be able to save yourself a lot of money when you travel.

45. What is the main factor in making people think that travel must be expensive? A. Friends. B. Co-workers. C. TV commercials on travel. D. Tourist guidebooks.

46. The underlined part “airlines don’t have you over a barrel” in paragraph 5 probably means “airlines can’t put you in a very difficult situation in which_________”. A. you are at a loss over what you can do next B. you have no choice about what airlines do C. they can offer you some help if needed D. they can demand everything from you

47. One way the author suggested to save money is to have lunch at a big restaurant because____. A. there are fewer customers at a big restaurant then B. special offers are provided during the lunch time C. dishes at lunch time are better worthy of the value D. a fancy lunch is as good as a fancy dinner

48. According to the passage, which of the following statement is TRUE? A. If you want to get travel cheaply, the only way is to backpack around. B. Refer to the guidebook if you want the latest information on travel. C. If you want to find a place to stay on travel, hotels are your first choice. D. Go to supermarkets if you want to find out what the local diet is about. 49. Which of the followings is the main topic of the passage? A. What to do and where to go while traveling. B. How to save money while you travel.

C. Things you should pay attention to on travel. D. Simply live like a local when you travel.

Parenting methods have been given some strange labels in recent years, with the most fearsome being the tiger mother who puts studying ahead of play and fun.

But now a style named after the sociable, intelligent dolphin(海豚)is causing something of a splash. Dolphin parenting is the term coined by US happiness advocate and author Shawn Achor to describe parents who are smart, fun, sociable and believe children learn better through play.

“It is important to note that both dolphin parents and tiger parents are interested in success, but choose a different means to the end,” Achor tells the Post.

“While a tiger parent might focus on hours of repetition to achieve success, a dolphin parent knows that the brain works best when it alternates(交替)between periods of performance (90 minutes or less) and recovery (play).

In his TED talk, “The Happiness Advantage”, Achor outlined why the tiger mum method, championed by Amy Chua in her book The Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother, failed in two ways.

“First, every time your child has a success, your brain will change the goalpost of what success looks like,” he says.

“Getting an 'A' won't make you happy because now you need to get your kids into a better school. Winning at the local science competition won't make you happy, because you want your kids to win now at

regional.”

Second, Achor says the formula does not work because it does not follow how the human brain works. Intelligence, creativity, productivity, energy and health all improve when the human brain is positive.

“If your success rates rise, happiness remains the same. If you raise happiness by increasing optimism, social connection and changing how you view stress, every single educational and business outcome improves.”

Hong Kong mum Angela says in many respects she and her husband Leigh could be considered dolphin parents.

“For us it is a natural thing. We do everything with her --- I go horse riding with Ally and she plays badminton with her dad. We go to the beach and swim together; we play games at home together and we eat dinner with her every night. Ally is quite a happy child,” she says.

“Kids need to be kids. We prefer Ally to learn from those kinds of experiences, rather than sitting behind a desk memorizing 500 things, and being able to do maths at level 10.”

Angela likes the idea of her daughter learning from her experiences, and believes it's important that children see their parents enjoying life.

According to Achor, being happy yourself is one of the first steps in becoming a dolphin parent. For some parents, being a dolphin will come naturally, while others will find they have to work at it, says Achor, who will become a father in February.

“Yes, some people are genetically happy---they have childhoods which make it easier for them to choose positive change. But that is not the end of the story,” he says, “only 10 per cent of your long-term happiness is predicted by your genes. Happiness is a choice.”

50. Compared with tiger parents, dolphin parents are more ______. A. thoughtful and cautious B. optimistic and critical C. flexible and positive D. energetic and hardworking

51. According to what Achor mentioned in his Ted talk, why are tiger parents not happy? A. Because their kids can’ t get an “A” in the exam as expected. B. Because their kids can’t win at a regional science competition. C. Because they can’t get their kids admitted into a better school. D. Because they keep the goalpost of success getting pushed further.

52. What message does the author most want to convey in paragraph 8 and 9? A. If you follow how our brain works, you will achieve success. B. Once you become successful, you will be happy.

C. Happiness is the fuel of success, not merely the result of it. D. Happiness limits our brain’s potential for success.

53. The example of Hong Kong mum Angela was mentioned in the passage to prove that_______. A. children need to grow up playing and learning from it

B. parents should spend more time together with their children C. Angela and her husband Leigh are dolphin parents D. Studying is not so important as play and fun

54. The last two paragraphs indicate that if you want to be a dolphin parent, _______. A. making yourself happy is all that you are supposed to do B. the first step is to make the childhood of your children happy C. you ought to make conscious and positive choices to be happy D. You should always put play and fun ahead of studying.

D

Can it really be thirty years since I received the last of the payments from Annie Mae? I find myself thinking about them more often as I approach my sixtieth birthday. Something about closing the chapters on six decades and opening the pages of a new one makes one reflect.

Annie Mae’s life has deeply touched mine. I first met her at the home of my in-laws in 1959. I had moved with my husband and our one-year-old child to Tuscaloosa, Alabama, so my husband could complete his undergraduate work at the University of Alabama. His father was a professor of finance at the university, and his mother was active in university and community affairs. I vividly recall entering their driveway and being overwhelmed by the size of their home, the beauty of the furnishings, and the large orchard.

Annie Mae was my in-laws’ maid. She prepared and served meals in her quiet, gentle way and then returned to the kitchen to read her Bible while we ate. She was a dedicated and devoted Christian, and I became increasingly taken with this gentle, remarkable lady. Often when I saw her eating alone, reading her Bible, I wanted to sit down with her and just talk. However, whites did not do that with African Americans in the South in those days, and I submitted to the local practice --- though it conflicted with my Christian beliefs.

In 1965, my world was suddenly uprooted. I found myself alone with two young sons when my husband wanted a divorce. I was fortunate to receive a full scholarship to the University of Connecticut in the field of special education. I decided to sell the furniture and household items and return to my home state with just our clothes.

Annie Mae asked if she could buy the boys’ beds. When I answered yes, she asked the price. “Thirty-five dollars,” I replied. Then, in her quiet way, she asked if I would sell them to her and trust her to send a little money each month.

I admired her and knew her to be a woman of God, trustworthy and honest. So I said, “Annie Mae, take them, they are yours.” I returned to Connecticut with my two sons. Faithfully each month, while my boys and I lived there, an envelope arrived from Annie Mae --- two dollars, three dollars, five dollars, always in cash. That became the surprise money for my boys; I used it to get them something special --- an ice cream, cookies, an outing. My sons were thrilled when Annie Mae’s money came, for they knew that a surprise would be coming their way.

A year passed. I earned my master of arts degree in special education and accepted a position as a special education teacher for the state of Connecticut. I had learned my lessons well. However, I was about to learn an even greater lesson, and Annie Mae would be the teacher.

Annie Mae’s last payment arrived about the time I completed my studies. Along with it came the following note:

Dear Mrs. Holladay,

I am sending you my last payment of three dollars to pay for the beds in full. I told my two sons that they could now go to the storage shed and put the beds together and sleep in them, for they are now paid for and rightfully ours. Thank you for your trust.

Love in Jesus, Annie Mae

I could not believe my eyes. I read the note two or three times, my eyes filled with tears. Had I only known earlier, I would have said, “Use them now. Don’t wait until you pay for them.”

Those would have been my thoughts, yet Annie Mae had other thoughts---thoughts the world could truly use. She sacrificed. She struggled. And finally, when the beds were truly hers, she let her sons, Paul and John, sleep in them. She was a living example of honor, the honor that should characterize all who claim to be Christian.

55. How did the author come to know Annie Mae? A. By communicating with her. B. By observing her. C. By chatting with her. D. By interviewing her.

56. Why didn’t the author sit down with Annie Mae and have a talk with each other? A. Because the author thought it conflicted with her Christian beliefs. B. Because Annie Mae was just a maid of the author’s in-laws.

C. Because African Americans were not equally treated at that time. D. Because Annie Mae was not a true Christian like her.

57. We might have concluded from the passage that the author was probably born in _______. A. 1936 B. 1956 C. 1965 D. 1966

58. How did the author feel when she received the last payment and the note from Annie Mae? A. Sympathetic and touched. B. Curious and puzzled. C. Moved and regretful. D. Confused and depressed. 59. We can infer from the passage that _________.

A. Annie Mae’s two sons felt unhappy because they had to pay off the money B. Annie Mae’s two sons didn’t sleep in the beds until she paid off the debts C. Mrs. Holladay’s two sons lived with their father after their parents divorced D. Mrs. Holladay’s two sons felt surprised when Annie Mae’s money came 60. Which of the following can be the best title for the text? A. The Last Payment B. Annie Mae’s Honor C. Reflection on My Marriage D. An unforgettable Friend

Sean 第二节:书面表达(满分30分) One possible version:

If I had a secret to share with someone else, I would go to my father and tell him about it. My father is

very kind and open-minded. He will never casually pass any judgment on what I say or do, even when I was a small child and often made stupid mistakes. I remember he used to comfort me and reason with me. He often encourages me to think for myself, make my own plans for study, and learn to bear responsibilities for my choices. In spite of his free style of parenting, he is always ready to offer me valuable suggestions whenever I ask. He is not only my respectable father, but also a close friend of mine, who can be loved, trusted and depended on.
