1.College Students Should Attend Physical Exercise

Physical exercise is a necessary part of college life. However, still some college students do not like to attend sports activities, they think those activities waste their time and influence their study. Indeed, it is very unwise for college students to keep distance from physical exercise because physical exercise is not harmful but good to them.

College students can benefit a lot from physical exercise. First of all, attending physical sports can help students build a strong body, and keep abounding energy. Moreover, physical exercise is an effective way to release pressure and keep a pleasant mood. Besides, by attending physical activities, students can have chances to contact and communicate with others which can help them improve their social skills.

Nowadays, all colleges and universities have provided many sports facilities for students to do physical exercises, students can chose freely according to their interests and needs. As for me, I am keen on all kinds of ball games, especially football and basketball. From these games, I have gained a lot, and enjoined great pleasure. To conclude, physical exercise is beneficial to every college students, and therefore do not hesitate to attend sports activities. 2. Online Games

As a product of modern computer and the Internet, online games have become very popular among college students. Many students have enjoyed great pleasure and satisfaction from these games. But as we see, some students lacking self discipline on too much indulge in these games, so that their health and academic performances are affected. This phenomenon has caused much worry from the teachers and parents.

However, some others argue that online games are not always harmful. They can train their ability of youngsters to respond to things quickly. Moreover, they can stimulate their imagination and their interest in computer science. More importantly, it does bring college students much pleasure and release their pressure greatly. Form my point of view, online games are a wonderful entertainment if you play them in a clever way. When they interfere too much with your study, it is better for you to give them up at

1

once, but if you have enough self control over them, you can certainly obtain real pleasure and benefit a lot from them. 3. Patriotism

Patriotism has been one of the great national spirits. It makes one ready to sacrifice his life for his country and to do many other deeds that can bring benefits to the people. Throughout history, it is just great patriotism that has helped a country win the wars, and survive the disasters. It is just great patriotism that has made a country strong, and made her history glorious.

In modern society, though our country has been 9in peaceful development, patriotism is still necessary. However, it has many new meanings and expressing ways. Firstly, in the new period of the socialism development, a patriot must be devoted to the construction of socialist modernization with Chinese characteristics. Secondly, facing economic globalization, a patriot must try to safeguard the nation’s interests on the basis of opening-up strategies of mutual benefit. Thirdly, patriotism embodies in the support of national reunification. Finally, love and respect for work is also one important reflection of patriotism.

As a college student in the 21st century, every one of us has responsibility to love our country. For one thing, we must study hard to obtain more knowledge to contribute to the construction of our motherland. For another, we must keep informed of current affairs and show concern to the national economy and the people’s livelihood. A patriotic college student must discard the mind of “Two ears can not hear out of the window”.

4. How to Deal with Peer Pressure?

College students are often obsessed by peer pressure from their classmates or schoolmates. Facing others’ hard work and good performance in academic and other aspects, many students feel great pressure. Then, how to deal with this kind of peer pressure?

The following measures can be taken. First, you should take a careful look at your present level and set a practical object. You needn’t always compare yourselves with those on the top and just make your efforts towards your object. Second, under peer pressure, you shouldn’t feel discouraged and pressed. Instead, you should make it your motivation for harder work. Finally, if you find

2

pressure is nearly beyond your control, you’d better turn to professional psychological guidance.

As a college student, I have no way to avoid peer pressure, so I try to figure out the way to do with it well. I set my own goal, including my practical level and my position among the peers. Because of my focus on my own goal, I have no time and energy to think about the pressure. So I’m little troubled by it. To conclude, we should not escape from peer pressure, but learn to make best use of it, since it can hardly be avoided. 5. Should College Students be Tutors?

Nowadays there are more and more provided tutors among college students. Some students even take a few tutor jobs at the same time. People have different opinions about this phenomenon. Some people believe college students can benefit a lot from being tutors. On the one hand they can earn some money and lessen the burden on their family. On the other hand they can have chances to apply their knowledge to the solution to the practical problems. However still others object to college students being a tutor. They think that a student should focus on his study instead of doing a part-time job. If they spend too much time on teaching, they will not have enough time to study, and naturally their academic performance will be affected.

Weighing the two arguments, I’m in favor of the former one. In my opinion, to be a tutor is a good practical activity for us college students, from which we can gain practical experience and skills. But it is worth noting that we cannot spend too much time in being tutors. We should balance the relationship between the tutor job and study.

6. Welcome to the camera Club

Anyone who is interested in photography welcome warmly. What you need to do is just to call us at 62514479 or email us at cameraclub@163.com. Looking forward to your participation! 7. Extravagant Spending on College Campus

According to a survey, in recent years, the monthly expenditure of a college student has been on the sharp rise. Many college students spend money like water and have no concept of thrift in their mind. They take it for granted that they spend money from their parents before they enter into society. This extravagant spending is mainly caused by the following factors.

First of all, nowadays, most students are the only children of their families. They are the apple in their family's eyes and naturally get more care and pocket money. Secondly, with the improvement of living standards, parents can afford higher expenditures of their children. Thirdly, some students like to pursue fashion and trends, which tends to need more money. Finally, campus love is also a possible factor causing extravagant spending. Form my point of view, a college student as a pure consumer should learn to be thrifty we should limit our expenditure on barely necessities but not buy whatever we want, regardless of their prices. The habit of thrift can help us form right values and is favorable to our future development. 8. A Quarrel in the Dormitory

Weeks ago I witnessed the quarrel between my two roommates. It shocked me the two good friends fired out just for a very trifling matter.

It was in the morning at weekend when I was washing my face in the bathroom. Suddenly I heard Ann and Sue shouting at each other. I hurried to come out to see what happened. It turned out that the noise of Sue’s closing the door waked Ann, whose bed is

4

just beside the door. Ann thought Sue deliberately closed the door heavily. Sue didn’t have made her fault and said Ann was making trouble out of nothing. So their argument became ambits of quarrel. Though later they stopped quarreling under our persuasion, neither of them would like apologize to the other.

Such a quarrel leaves me to think a lot about dormitory harmony. If either Ann or Sue can be a little tolerant or take a better way to express herself, this quarrel, I think, can be avoided easily. It is no doubt that a harmony dormitory life benefits all the members. But it needs our common efforts to build it. 9. Students’ Pursuit for Famous Brands

Nowadays many college students like to pursue famous brands. From clothes to mobile phones, even study articles like electronic dictionaries and pens, they are inclined to buy famous brands. Moreover, many students from poor families begin to follow this consumption trend as well. This phenomenon has aroused wide attention.

The following reasons can account for college students’ preference for famous brands. Above all, in many college students’ eyes, a famous brand is a symbol of sophistication and taste. They expect others to admire their high class and good taste. What’s more, in modern society, famous brands to some extent are equal to fashion, which has a great attraction to young college students. Besides, parents’ spoiling their children helps form their bad consumption habit.

As far as I am concerned, it is irrational for college students to pursue famous brands. After all, most of famous brands are far beyond their consumption ability. Besides, it is not famous brands but a person’s noble character that really makes him high class. Therefore, college students should attach more importance to cultivating a good character rather than pursuing famous brands. 10. Our Schoolmate Is in Need of Your Help

Students’ Union 11. The University’s Branch Campuses in Suburban Areas

In recent years more and more universities have built up their branch campuses in suburban areas. Now it is very difficult to find a university without a branch campus. Maybe no one can tell clearly when the first branch campus came out, but the reasons behind this phenomenon are obvious.

Among these reasons, the enrollment expansion of universities plays a very vital role. As more and more freshmen are remitted to universities, the original facilities, including classrooms, apartments, dining houses, laboratories and the like, are not enough any more. What’s more, the land in the suburb is relatively low in price, which is affordable for most universities. Besides, the quiet environment in suburban areas is more suitable for students to study. As a college student, I think, it is necessary and beneficial for many universities to build up a branch campus. However the building of branch campuses brings some problems. For one thing, the students in some branch campuses cannot enjoy good enough facilities and the teachers due to limited resources. For another it leads to less direct communications among teachers and students. Therefore the university should take a full account before it decides to build up a branch campus.

12. Young People Should Have Ideals

“What are you going to do when you grow up?” When I was a child, people often asked me this question about the ideal. Undoubtedly, every individual, especially a young person, should have an ideal. Hardly can we find any great people we know ideal when they were young.

An ideal is a vital importance to one's growth and success. On the one hand, an ideal is the target of one's life. Once you decide what your ideal is, you know where to go, and which way to take. Otherwise, you might become puzzled in many things in your life. On the other hand, an ideal is like the engine of vehicles. Only when we have our own ideals, can we find the origin of energy and enthusiasm in life, and become active and perseverant.

Whatever your ideal is, careful plan and preparation is vital to its realization. Of course, the path from where you are to where you want to get is not always smooth and straight. Therefore, an optimistic, positive mind is indispensable in the process of your persevering your ideal. In a word, only if you have an ideal, you will have the chance of realizing it.

13. A Letter Applying for a Bank Loan

Sep 12th, 2008 To whom it may concern,

I am a freshman of Lianhe University, majoring in Applied Physics. I am writing in the hope that I may obtain a bank loan to support my study in Applied Physics for the following four years. I give you my promise that the loan would be used properly. Meanwhile, I’ll spare no effort to work hard both in the study and my future career so as to pay back the loan. I would be greatly obliged if my application is granted. And I am looking forward to hearing from you soon.

Song Xue 14. Study and Work-study Program

Nowadays, more and more college students are taking part in work-study programs in their spare time. Many of them choose to be a tutor or doing a part-time job in school dining room or library. Also some others do a part-time delivering man or promotion specialist or other jobs alike.

There are mainly three different reasons for college students to take work-study program. First, to earn money is the main aim of many students, they want to relieve the burden on their family by doing a part-time job. Second, some students take work-study programs as a channel by which they know the society and improve their practical skills. Third, still other students doing part-time job just for fun or kill time.

From my point of view, it goes without saying that college students can benefit a lot from work-study programs. However, those students who get part-time jobs should keep it in mind that study is prior to anything else. Besides, they should spend their income from part-time job reasonably.

15. How to Build an Ideal Teacher-Student Relationship

The relationship between a teacher and the student can be either good or bad, helpful or harmful. Either way, the relationship may affect the student for the rest of his life. A good teacher-student relationship will make learning enjoyable and efficient, and make the teacher's job worthwhile. In contrast, a bad relationship can discourage the students from learning, and make teaching an unpleasant task.

But how to build an ideal teacher-student relationship? First of all, the teacher and the student should respect each other, which is the precondition about good relationship. Moreover the teacher's attitude plays an important role. If the teacher is too strict, it might frighten the student. On the other hand, if the teacher is too permissive, the student may become lazy. Besides, the teacher should give the student encouragement, as well as have patients and understanding. Finally, as for the student, he should be eager for knowledge and willing to work hard. If he learns from his teacher modestly, he will be able to profit fully from his teacher's teaching.

8

In conclusion, a good teacher-student relationship need common efforts from both the teacher and the student, and it can be mutually beneficial. The student gains knowledge enjoyably and the teacher gains satisfaction from his teaching job. 16. Champion Spokesperson

Nowadays, we often can see that some champions in the college entrance examination speak for some products. This phenomenon has sparked much debate.

Some people think it will create a win-win situation for a champion to be a spokesperson since it can bring profits for both the producer and the champion himself or herself. Besides, these models in study get publicized, which to some extent will stimulate other students to study hard.

However, other people object to this strongly. They insist that this behavior should be banned because in most cases the champion has not used the product they speak for. Furthermore, if a champion is paid too much attention to or is of ten exposed to the media, it is not good for his or her growth.

Weighing up the pros and cons, I prefer to the latter opinion. In my opinion, a spokesperson must be responsible for the product he or she speaks for, but the young champion is not mature enough to do this. Besides, to be a champion in the college entrance examination doesn’t mean the student has made final success. Attending the speaking activities will influence his or her normal study. Therefore, I think the champions’ speaking behaviors should not be encouraged.

17. An Invitation Letter

June 15th, 2008

Dear Xue Feng,

This June 30th I am going to graduate, so I want to hold a party on Saturday evening in my house. It would be pleasant to have you here.

So interesting will this party be that you can't afford to miss it. For one thing, we will have a big meal, sing the popular songs and play games. For another, it also provides a good opportunity for you to meet many friends that you haven't seen for a long time.

What an important thing it is for me to get your participation.

9

First, you are my best friend and bring home to me many things. Second, we haven't seen each other for quite a long time and I am eager to see you. The party would not be complete without you.

The party will begin at seven thirty p.m. Is it possible for us to see you at seven on Saturday evening in my house? I do hope you can come.

Sincerely yours, Ma Yuan 18. Skipping Classes on College Campus

In colleges and universities, the phenomenon of students skipping classes is not unusual. There are often some students who skip those classes for feeling unwell or other private reasons. Besides, still some students don’t go to class without any reason but for they don’t want to.

There are two main reasons for college students skipping classes. First, compared with in middle school, students have more freedom in college. It depends more on one student’s consciousness whether he will attend the class. So those students lacking self-discipline begin to skip classes. Second, some teachers’ lectures could not attract students’ interests, so that some students would rather skip classes to study what they are interested in.

For whatever reasons, skipping classes does bring negative effects on students’ study. Therefore, it is necessary to take some effective measures to reduce this phenomenon. On the one hand, the school and teachers should make students realize the negative effects of skipping classes and enhance their consciousness of attending the class. On the other hand, teachers have to improve their teaching quality to attract students’ interests in the courses. Only in this way can the phenomenon of skipping classes be reduced as soon as possibly.

19. A Boom in Continuing Education

From the graph, we can learn the number of the Continuing Education participation has kept increasing from 1992 to 2007 in X city. In 1992 there were only thirty thousand people taking part in the Continuing Education, but in 1995 the number grown to 60 thousand ,and in 2000, one hundred and 40 , and by to 2007, the

10

number has reached two hundred and teen thousand . It can be seen easily that Continuing Education is gaining more and more popularity. The following reasons are responsible for this boom in continuing education. Firstly, during the work many people begin to realize what they have learned in school is far from enough. So they turn to continuing education to gain more knowledge and skills. Moreover, as the science and technology in China are developing very fast, adults after graduation have to refresh themselves. In addition, in modern society, those without bachelor’s degrees or above are less competitive.

As far as I am concerned the Boom in Continuing Education is a necessity. Improvise those under job people with transcends to get advanced degrees and gain more knowledge. As our society develops, more and more people will receive continuing education in the future. 20. Is it Good to Write about Martial Arts Novels in the Textbooks?

Recently, the compiling group of the Chinese textbooks has made a decision that some parts of a martial arts novel would be selected as one of the texts. This has sparked off a heated debate.

Some people think that it is a good idea. They say the martial arts novels are also a good literature type and should be included in the textbooks. However, others are strongly against this decision. They say it will do no good to students because these novels sing the praises for nothing but fighting and revenge.

In my opinion, it is not reasonable to select the text from a marital arts novel. Firstly, the main theme of these novels is revenge. Secondly, the characters do nothing but fight with each other. It seems they needn’t make a living. Thirdly, there are all kinds of factions in the novels. Students who have not established their values and outlook of life will be affected by these ideas. Therefore, I insist that these novels should be removed from the textbook. Some good materials should be selected to instruct the students to form the correct outlook of life.

21. Is This the Way to Relieve the Burden of Students?

In order to relieve the burden of students in primary and high school, the Ministry of Education has decided to force the schools to close on weekends. But contrary to the good intention, many

11

parents have employed family tutors for their children. This behavior has aroused heated discussion.

Some people criticize these parents strictly because they think excessive pressure will injure children both physically and mentally. They hold that health is o the first importance to children. However, many other people hold the opposite opinion. They stand by these parents. They say nowadays children are faced with great pressure from their schoolwork and employment. These parents want to help their children win in the stating line, which is a wise doing.

Weighing up the pros and cons, I don’t think it is advisable for parents to employ family tutors for their children learning is not the only thing for a student. Too heavy burden is unfavorable to the healthy growth of a child. In my opinion, instead of placing a lot of pressure on the children, parents and teachers should make sure that the children make the best use of class time, leaving more free time for them to go in for other activities.

22. Machine Translation and Human Translation

In recent years, all kinds of electronic dictionaries and translation software have been developed. With the development of technology, these electronic dictionaries and software can help us translate not only words and phrases, but even sentences and paragraphs. So some people come to the conclusion that machine translation will replace traditional human translation. However, I couldn't agree with this argument.

Admittedly, translation machines and software bring much convenience for our study and work. With them, we needn't bother to live through the heavy dictionaries. However, machine translation has its disadvantages. First, generally speaking, translation software only can give direct translation, which is sometimes not in accordance with the original articles in logic and meaning. Second, some people depend on electronic dictionaries and software too much, which is unfavorable to their improvement in language ability.

Considering the above mentioned, I think that machine translation cannot replace human translation, but it is a good complementary to human translation. Therefore, we should combine

12

machine translation with human translation efficiently. 23.How to Make Full Use of Reference Books?

Nowadays reference books have become a problem of great concern for both teachers and students. There are many kinds of reference books available in the book market. A smarter use of these books is certainly beneficial. But the misuse and over-use of them may cause a lot of problems.

First of all, teaching reference books might make the students less attentive in class. Armed with reference books, many students may think that they know what the teacher is going to talk about. So they may not listen to the teacher in class at all. Secondly, some students rely on the reference books too much, which is unfavorable to the improvement of their ability to work out the solutions for themselves. Thirdly, there are some reference books with many mistakes, which might mislead the students.

Considering the above mentioned, we should be careful in selecting and using reference books. Firstly, we should check the contents of the book carefully, but not only pay attention to the brand of the publishing house. In addition we can turn to the recommendation of teachers and students around us. Besides, reference books are just an assistant, so we shouldn't rely on them too much. Only in this way can we make full use of reference books. 24. University Mergence

Mergence is a new trend in university development. As a hot topic on and off campus, it has received much of public attention. People's attitudes towards it vary greatly.

People against it see it as a hasty decision, which has some potential problems. They claim, for instance, located far away from each other, universities involved with mergence are usually faced with the tough problem of management. But other people favor as an important step that Chinese universities take towards the goal of first-class university in the world. They argue that only through mergence can our universities give full play to their disadvantages. They also point out that university mergence will increase the competitive power of our universities in the world.

Weighing the two arguments, I think, university mergence has more advantages than disadvantages. Mergence may bring the

13

re-integration of resources of the universities and enable them to complement each other. It is beneficial to the development of both the universities and the students. But the universities, before deciding to merge, should take into account the potential dangers resulting from the mergence.

25. Will Network Classrooms Replace Traditional Classrooms? With the popular visitation of the internet, network classrooms are gaining more and more popularity. As a new teaching pattern, network classrooms have become an effective compliment to traditional classrooms. So some people propose on question: will network classrooms replace traditional classrooms?

As to this question, the opinions vary from one to another. Some people think it quite possible for network classrooms to take the place of traditional classrooms. First, network classrooms needn’t have face-to-face communication, and are not limited by time and place, which facilities both teachers and students. Secondly, network classrooms release teachers from repeating the same contents. Since the video or audio material can be played time and again. However, many people have opposite stand points. They say that with online courses students like direct communication with teachers and their confusion can not be solved instantly. In addition, the computer system cannot be guaranteed to work stably all the time.

Personally, both network classrooms and traditional classrooms are necessary for students. If traditional teaching patterns and the modern ones like network classrooms can be combined together, more fruitful education is sure to be realized. 26.A Letter of Apology

Sep.10th,2008 Dear Mr. Wang,

I’m writing you this letter to apologize for my failing to hand in the paper on time. I'm very sorry for the convenience brought by my delay. Please accept my sincere apology with gratitude.

The reason for my delay was the time was knocked down by a cold. Moreover, I had no way out because I was too weak to write a single word. Therefore, it is not in my power to finish the paper on time. I hope you will understand me and excuse me for my delay.

14

However, I will do my utmost to finish the paper and hand it in as soon as possible. In my opinion, the importance of punctuality cannot be emphasized too much. So I assure you that I will hand in my homework on time from now on.

Sincerely yours, Wu Hua 27. Campus Lectures

Nowadays more and more lectures are held on college campuses. These lectures are usually on different topics, such as arts, life, psychology, the economy, world issues. Lectures have become an important part of college campus life.

Undoubtedly college students have benefited a lot from various lectures. Above all, the lectures broaden the students' knowledge horizon and cultivate their interest in different fields. What's more, some lectures teach students practical knowledge and skills, such as how to make up and how to become self-confident. Besides, lectures make the life of college students colorful and enjoyable. With these merits, lectures are a good complement to required classes. However, if a student spends too much time attending lectures, his regular study might be affected. Therefore, in my opinion, college students should attend good lectures on condition that they do their class work as well. 28. Certificates Craze on Campus

In recent years, to get a certificate has become a new craze among college students. Just randomly, ask a student on campus what he or she is busy doing, quite possibly, you may get the answer that he or she is preparing for a certificate of some kind. Why does this craze appear?

There are two mainly reasons behind this phenomenon. First, it is the employments pressure that forces college students to get more certificates. With the admission expansion of colleges, a large more graduates have to face the fierce competition in the job markets. How can one make himself more competitive, more certificates at hands maybe. Second, the diplomas and certificates are still important standard by which many employers measure a person’s ability in order to increase qualification for a job, the students compel themselves to run from one exam to another.

15

Form my point of view, we should be more rational when it comes to certificates, since certificates do not necessarily prove one’s ability, being crazy in getting certificates blindly. It is nothing but wasting time. To conclude, we should focus on improving our ability but not getting a certificate of no practical value. 29. Celebrity Spokesperson

Nowadays, everyday we can see many celebrity spokespersons promoting a product or a social campaign on TV, the Internet or other media. This is an intensely popular trend that we cannot fail to notice.

There is no doubt that the celebrity spokespeople could boost the sale of a product. However, some celebrities, who lack a sense of responsibility, have become the marketing tool of some companies without enough knowledge of the product they will speak for. Besides, some celebrity spokespersons, for economic profits, help the companies exaggerate their products, even those companies producing and selling fake and inferior items. This kind of behavior has produced great negative impacts on consumers and the whole society.

From my point of view, celebrity spokespersons play a positive role. As is seen, some stars’ endorsement of social activities and public campaigns raises public awareness, giving rise to changes in public behavior. However, those irresponsible speaking behaviors should be severely criticized and penalized. The related departments should make detailed rules and regulations on the behavior of speaking.

30. The Popularity of Blog

In recent years, blog has become very popular. More and more people have created their own blogs and often visit others’ blogs. They use blog to reveal their inner voice or collect and share thoughts and things they find interesting. In brief, blog is an online diary or a frequently updated personal page.

Why does blog become so popular in such a short time? Firstly, it is the widespread of Internet that provides a platform for the appearance and popularity of blog. Secondly, anyone can create his own blog as he wishes. Blog has no fixed rules and needn't professional knowledge and skills, which enables millions of people

16

to have a voice and connect with others. Thirdly, blog covers all kinds of topics from daily life to political forums, from individual thoughts to world events. Among millions of blogs, you can always find something you are interested in.

However, blog has some problems. For one thing, plagiarism in blog is not unusual. The protection of blog copyright cannot be guaranteed. For another, many blog content so in and mass and some even include unhealthy things. Therefore, blog still has a long way to run before it becomes mature.

31. Advantages of Trying New Things

It is widely accepted that one is more likely to succeed at things he already knows how to do well. However, to limit ourselves to doing only those things we are good at will make us miss many opportunities to develop other interests and skills. Therefore, sometimes it is necessary for us to try some new things and take some rests. Though we have the risk of failure when trying new things, we can get many advantages from it.

Firstly, the process of trying a new thing is a rewarding experience, from which we may feel a different world. Secondly, even if we fail, we can still absorb experience and lessons from the trying process and our failure. Thirdly, if it turns out that we succeed at this new try, we'll get great pleasure and confidence. Finally, it is impossible for us to never fail even if we do only what we are familiar with. We don't know when we'll meet the situation we can't control. With experience of trying new things, when facing unexpected situations, we can deal with them better.

Considering the above mentioned, we needn't be afraid of new things but should bravely try them. But it is worth noting that trying new things bravely does not mean acting rashly and blindly. We should take full account before we are ready to try new things. 32. Holiday Economy

As we see, the extended holidays have caused unexpected great travel craze and brisk economic activities. But there are many debates on the advantages and disadvantages of this kind of holiday economy. Many people, especially some economists, are in favor of the holiday economy. They believe that tourism-based holiday economy has raised consumption and helped to spur the domestic

17

demands. In addition, transportation, catering, hotels and service industries become flourishing during long holidays.

However, many others argue that the holiday economy do more harm than good. First, the travel craze puts a heavy burden on the traffic system. Second, thousands of tourists full scenic spots causing over crowdedness and safety problems.

As to me, I believe the advantages of holiday economy outweigh its disadvantages. After all, holiday economy greatly benefits the development of our overall economy. Besides, consumers can enjoy more colorful commodities and more preferential policies provided by the merchants. But the government should take effective measures to reduce the side effects of holiday economy. 33. Education For All

Nowadays in China, the limit to candidates for college entrance examination is not so strict as before. People of all ages and even married people can take the examination and have a chance of becoming a college student.

The deregulation has many advantages. Firstly, it provides more people with chances to receive high education. There are many people who have once lost the chance to enter a college for some reason. Now they can pick up their own dreams of being a college student. Secondly, it will introduce more students with different backgrounds and the abilities for colleges and universities. Finally, it stimulates competition and promotes the candidates to work harder.

However, relaxing the limit of age and marriage might bring some problems. For one thing, married students have to take care of the family and children, which brings more difficulties for school management. For another, there might be a gap between the elder students and the other young students. Therefore, more attention should be paid to the enrollment of those people of other age groups and married persons.

34. Free Tickets for Travel

Recently, in many cities, consumption tickets or entrance tickets for travel are distributed to the consumers for free. The move is welcomed by many people. They scramble to get these tickets via the Internet or on the phone.

18

No doubt, this move brings a win-win result. On the one hand, consumers have chance to enjoy the travel for less money. On the other hand, free tickets attract more travelers, which will surely bring more profits for travel agencies and other related departments. Besides, the development of travel industry will drive the development of many other industries.

In my point, free distribution of the tickets for travel is a good policy and it should be continued. But the high ticket price is still a big problem in the travel agencies of our country, which can not be solved only through free tickets. Therefore, travel agencies and other related departments should produce more good policies beneficial to the people.

35. Does e-mail make people get closer or drift apart?

Nowadays, more and more people are exchanging a great variety of information by using electronic mails instead of traditional ways of mailing letters. Some people think that e-mail makes relationships among people closer, while some others maintain that makes people drift apart.

Those who hold the former opinion insist that the appearance of e-mail makes communication quicker and more convenient. By e-mail people can deliver more information including pictures and sounds. However, some others think e-mail with the same format and print font includes less emotion, then traditional letters written by hand. Most people use e-mails to deliver information instead of feelings.

From my point of view, e-mail does bring great convenience for people, but it is not a better way to express our feelings than traditional letters. Our hand-writing on the paper can deliver much emotion. Therefore, when you want to express your love and care to someone, writing a letter to her or him by hand is a wise choice. 36. The Rise of “Shanzhai”Culture

The vast array of knockoff name-brand products, such as cell phones, DVDs, MP3 players, have made “Shanzhai” watches, use “Shanzhai” cell phones, and even watch “Shanzhai”TV shows.

The popularity of “Shanzhai” products is mainly due to the following two reasons. Firstly they have practical functions which apply to the need to the public, and their designs in exterior

19

appearance are fashionable. Secondly, the prices of these products are much lower than that of the original products they imitate. Thanks to them, more people at the grass-roots level can enjoy the benefits of modern technology.

From my point of view, the “Shanzhai” fever will go on because there are still market needs for them. However, “Shanzhai” products do make illegal profits by violating intellectual property rights and evading taxes. Besides, imitation always has its limits, so they have some shortages compared with the original products. Therefore, I think “Shanzhai” products should have their innovations instead of copying others simply. 37. A Food Poisoning Accident

Last month, I witnessed a food poisoning accident happening to my classmates. At that time the situation was really very dangerous and urgent. Though finally they got out of danger, this accident is still vivid in my mind.

That day was Julie’s birthday, one of my classmates. In order to celebrate it, her roommates bought a big birthday cake for her from a supermarket nearby. They shared the cake happily. However, after a while, all of them felt abdominal pain, nausea and dizziness. Two of them even cannot stand up because of great pain. We rushed to send them to the hospital. It turned out that the cake they ate had expired its guarantee period. Fortunately, due to timely treatment, they all recovered very soon.

However, this accident leaves me a deep ponder. I think it is very urgent to take effective measures to improve food safety. Firstly, the government should strengthen supervision and administration on food safety. More importantly, to those who immoral businessmen, more strict punishment should be given. Besides, we consumers should be more careful in buying food. Only in this way can we make sure that no same accident happens. 38. Internet and Privacy

Internet has penetrated into all the aspects of our life and work. We can study and work by it. We can find a job by it. We can communicate by it. We can entertain by it. We can buy and sell by it. We can do almost everything on Internet, and almost anywhere, anytime.

20

However, at the same time Internet provides services for us, it is inevitably invading our privacy to some degree. The services on most websites require our registry. If we want to enjoy these services, we have to provide much private much private information, including our names, genre, address, telephone number and sometimes bank accounts. Due to the poor Internet administration and weak network security, our information might be open, stolen or sold. Even sometimes the information will be misused by the criminals.

Considering the above-mentioned, we must enhance the alertness when using the Internet. First, when we need Internet service, we should always log on those big legal websites. Second, if the service requires important private information, you should think twice before you type in it.

Nowadays, quite a few college students lack consciousness of

21

being grateful. They turn to take such things for granted, as parents supporting them, teachers helping them, and waiters serving them. They are even mean to say \"Thank you\" to others. This phenomenon has caused great attention from the whole society. The following reasons can account for the lack of gratefulness consciousness. First of all, unsound family education plays an important role. Many parents turn to pay too much attention to children's academic performance, but ignore their value orientation. Moreover, schools don't input enough time and money in moral education. Besides, nowadays, college students get so much love that they are insensitive to others' care and help.

Considering the seriousness of the problem, it is high time to take effective measures to strengthen college students’ consciousness of being grateful. First, parents should improve self-quality and influence children by their own behaviors. Second, our society and schools must increase input in moral education, and try to build the atmosphere of being grateful. Finally, we college students should learn to express our gratefulness to people around us, just beginning from the simple “Thank you”. 41. The Moonlight Clan

Nowadays, more and more people, especially the young are joining in the army of “the moonlight clan”. These people exhaust their earnings every month without any savings. Many people think this is a fashionable life style, while more other people object to this kind of consumption style.

Those who support “the moonlight clan” think that those people know how to enjoy life and have a higher life quality. However, more other people criticize “the moonlight clan”. They say that the consumption habit of “the moonlight clan” is unhealthy and sometimes wasteful. In addition, no savings will place “the moonlight clan” in a difficult position in case of unexpected expenses.

Weighing these two arguments, I prefer to the latter one. In my eyes, though “the moonlight clan” may acquire temporary satisfaction from their consumption, in the long term, it is unfavorable to their family and career. Just as a proverb says, one should always prepare for a rainy day. 42. Harmonious Society

22

Now, building a harmonious society has become a hot topic. A harmonious society means individuals, families, ethnic groups get on well with each other and live harmoniously together. It also means that human beings live harmoniously with nature.

The following are my suggestions on how ot build a harmonious society. Firstly, governments at all levels should try their best to deal with the issues concerning people’s fundamental interests such as employment, housing and social security. Secondly, rural and urban community construction and management should be pushed forward through scientific, democratic and legal means. Lastly, as a member of this society, everyone should learn to get along well with others as well as nature. Smile to others; others will smile to you. Treat the nature well; the nature will give back more to you.

As far as our college students are concerned, it is our responsibility to contribute to building a harmonious society. On the one hand, we should learn to be kind and tolerant to others around us, as well as treat the environment and nature friendly. On the other hand, we should try to help the public to know better the idea of building a harmonious society, making more people take part in it.

43. Parents Making Decisions for Their Children

In modern society, traditional patriarchy is still influencing Chinese parents. They tend to make almost all decisions for their children, from choosing school to picking up a profession and to deciding whom they are to marry. Sometimes even those detail things such as clothing and daily timetables have to be decided by parents.

However, deciding everything for children does not help them but harm them in many ways. On the one hand, it will make children lack independence and initiative, which is unfavorable to their development in the long run-On the other hand, in many cases parents' decisions are not always in accordance with children’ personal ideas and interests, this will make children form resistance and naturally influence their growth.

From my point of view, it is unwise for parents to make every decision for their children. It is obvious that parents can not accompany their children for ever. To grow to be independent is a

23

nature way for everybody. Therefore, in my opinion parents should give their children chances to make their own decisions .They may help their children make choices instead of replacing them to make choices.

44. Parental Hopes and Personal Ideals

All parents hope their children will have a bright future. However, parents’ expectations for their children are not always in accordance with their children’s personal ideals, and sometimes they are even conflicting with each other. This is often a main cause for quarrels and gaps between parents and children. But what lead to the conflict between parental hopes and personal ideals?

The following three factors contribute to the conflict. First of all, in this fast-changing society, parents and children have too many differences in mind. Secondly, traditional patriarchy is still influencing Chinese parents in modern society. They are used to making decisions for their children. Third, nowadays young people have strong independence, who want to plan their own future and control their own destiny. Thus the conflict between parents and children inevitably appear.

In order to solve the conflict, both parents and children should pay their efforts. For one thing, parents should give their children rights to make their own decisions. They may help their children make choices instead of replacing them to make choices. For another, children should learn to respect their parents’ advices since parents tend to have more life experience. Besides, to communicate with each other actively is necessary to their understanding each other. As long as both parents and children learn to think from the other side’s point of view, the conflicts between them can be avoided. 45. Learn to give up wisely

“Never give up” has been accepted by many people as a positive life attitude. Admittedly persistence often plays an important role in one success. However, in many cases to give up might be wiser than to persist blindly.

The following reasons can support this argument. Firstly, sometimes our goal may be unrealistic. If we insist on it blindly, it will finally bring us nothing but failure. At this time, what we should

24

do is give up the original goal and reset a more practical one. Secondly, not all persistence can bring deserving results. For a very simple example if we keep waiting in line for hours, only to have a luncheon restaurant may be it is unwise. Finally, to give up wisely does not mean admitting failure. Instead, it does mean a new hope of success.

Considering the above mentioned, we can come to the conclusion that to give up wisely is a kind of more mature life attitude. Though giving up sometimes is painful and costly, in the long run what we gain will definitely far out weight what we lose. 46. A Witness of a Theft Incident

Yesterday I witnessed a theft incident on my way home. The thief was so that it left me a very deep impression...It was in the rush hour when many people would buy tickets the subway station. A woman took her purse and pay out for the ticket and then she put her purse back into her bag and turn to leave when a middle aged man rushed pass her muttering “excuse me”. She didn’t feel unusual and went into station indeed her purse had been stolen by that man. To our surprise the thief seems not to be nervous at all and even began to look others up and down. Maybe he was searching for the next target. At that time, some persons including me witnessed the process but unfortunately no one dared to warn that woman. This incident makes me ashamed and leaves me a deep thought. The pickpocket has posed a great threat to residents and visitors’

25

property safety. Undoubtedly, it is an urgent thing to take action to prevent pickpocket. However, it cannot dependent on the police only, instead it needs our common efforts .We cannot shut our eyes and mouths to the pickpocket anymore .It should be kept in our minds that our forces are far beyond these thieves.

47. A Complaint Letter to One Neighbor

August 14th, 2008. Dear Mr. John,

I’m one of your neighbors. And I'm now writing and behave of the resident’s association to complain about your making noises. You disturb others' normal lives. Since you moved in the building three months ago we have received many complaints about your bad behaviors.

According to the complaints you have shown very little consideration for the other residents of the building. For example, you often turned on the music very loudly till late. Furthermore every weekend your extremely noisy parties last until the early hours of the next morning so that other residents can not have a good rest. Much words though some residents have talked to you about the noise you made your behavior has no improvement.

A harmony community life needs every resident’s effort. Of course you are no exception. We hope you can realize and stop your improper behavior as soon as possible. Unless you do something to improve the present situation, we will have no other choice but to take legal action.

Yours sincerely Lin Yue 48. How to Deal with Depression

In recent years more and people have suffered from depression. With the increasingly fierce competition, more and more people are bearing great pressure from study, work and life. Under great pressure, many people begin to become sad, hopeless and finally

26

suffer from depression.

Depression has brought great bad influence on one’s study, work and life. In fact, depression affects not only one’s , mind but also his body. Those with severe depression even are unable to continue their work or carry out normal activities of depression. The symptoms mainly include feelings of sadness, hopelessness, not wanting food and trouble sleeping. Besides, depression is linked to many other diseases, like heart disease. What’s worse, depression is one of the main causes of people’s suicide.

Considering the bad effects of depression, it must be taken more seriously. For those patients with depression, first of all, it is important to accept treatment timely instead of covering or ignoring the disease. Besides, people should learn to release pressure and keep a pleasant mood. Actually, the best treatment is a combination of medication and psychological help. Only in this way can people reduce the chance of suffering from depression. 49. How to Improve Public Morals

Nowadays there are still many behaviors against public morality, such as spitting or littering in public places, cutting in line, wasting water or electricity, and so on. One of the main reasons for these immoral behaviors is that some people lack personal manners and public consciousness.

Actually, these small things in many people’s eyes have brought great bad effects on our community. Above all, these immoral behaviors disturb social order and disrupt social stability. Moreover, one’s violating public morality not only invades others’ benefits but also does harm to himself. For example, if most people but pirated products, those original producers will suffer great damage and might lose the enthusiasm to continue their producing, which in turn influences consumers.

Taking the above effects into consideration, I think, it is high time that we took more effective measures to improve public morals. First of all, education plays a very vital role, we must utilize education to make people know their behaviors’ influence on the society and follow public morals consciously. Besides, the government should improve the administration system and ensure the efficient implementation of administration measures.

50. Should We Use a Machine to Make Him Breathe?

Suppose a man’s brain is dead because of an accident. He has lost his consciousness, that is, he can not think, speak or hear. Should we use a machine to make him breathe? Facing this question, different people have different opinions.

Some people think that it is meaningless to keep an unconscious person alive because he can never know this. Instead, this machine only makes his family and friends hurt longer. However, other people hold the opposite opinion. They insist that one’s life can not be announced to end so easily. Anyone but the man himself has no right to do that. Besides, if his family asks the doctor not to use the machine and let him die, it might haunt them for the rest of their lives.

As for me, I am in favor of the former opinion. In my opinion, an unconscious person whose brain is dead has lost his value as a social being. For him, his life has ended. To make him go on breathing is just a console for those living people. Therefore, I think it is unnecessary to use a machine to keep the man’s breathing. His family and friends should accept the fact of his death.
