摘要：A printing apparatus receives printing data from a host device (1) and is

configured to selectively switch between a first state in which it is ready to print said dataand a second state in which it is not ready to print said data, and to notify said host device(1) of the currently selected state. The printing apparatus (2) comprises: one or moredetectors (28, 29) for detecting depletion or absence and replenishment or presence ofone or more consumable materials (10) consumed by printing said data, and for causingsaid printing apparatus (2) to enter said second state in response to detecting depletionor absence of one or more of said consumable materials (10), a controlling deviceincluding an operation key (14) that can be manually operated to cause said printingapparatus (2) to perform a primary function or a secondary function, and a functionselector (28). One of multiple modes of control is selectively assigned to said operationkey, said modes of control comprising a first mode for causing said printing apparatus (2)to perform said primary function and a second mode for causing said printing apparatus(2) to perform said secondary function. The function selector (28) selects either said firstor said second mode of control in response to predetermined states of the apparatus.
