第三部分 阅读理解(共15小题;每小题2分, 共30分)
A
The singer, Mick Jagger, of the Rolling Stones sings a song that tells people they can‟t always get what they want but if we try sometimes we can get what we need. The past years in my life my parents have told me this saying many times. I‟ve always complained about the quote(引语). Although over time I have told myself to learn from it.
This year my girlfriend flew off to college in West Palm, Florida. This has been a killer for
me because I haven‟t been able to see her and she is having a rough time in school. The last two months have been hard but we are working through it. I have been trying to get my dad to buy me a plane ticket to go down there. My dad told me if I brought him some money he would help me pay for the ticket. I started to complain to him because I had no way of getting any money to give him. I spent several days and nights thinking of ways to earn money to go see my girlfriend. I finally came to the conclusion that I would get a job and work hard to earn some money to give to my dad. I applied to Safeway and I ended up getting the job.
I have been working at Safeway for about a month now and work hard to earn money to go
see my girlfriend. The other day my mom had surprised me and told me that she asked her boss if she could use their business miles(旅费) to buy me a ticket down to Florida for two weeks. I was very thankful and told her I would help pay for anything that I have to. The thought of me working hard and getting a job showed my mom that I really cared and was trying my best to be a successful person. I believe that you can‟t always get what you want but if you try sometimes, you get what you need.

A.The author was lazy and unwilling to work hard. B.The author‟s father was too mean to give him money. C.The author‟s actual action won support from his mother. D.The author was unable to tear himself away from his girl friend.
59.By writing the passage, the author tries to show .

How long are you willing to wait for a webpage to open before you start to lose your patience? Half a minute? A few seconds?
Google engineers have discovered that even 400 milliseconds―as short as the blink of an eye―is too long for most Internet users.
A millisecond is one thousandth of a second. People hardly notice such a small time difference, but it does cause them to stop searching, reported The New York Times.
“Subconsciously, you don‟t like to wait,” said Arvind Jain, a Google engineer. “Every millisecond matters.”
Nowadays, millions of smart-phones and computers are constantly gathering and sending out information. With so many people downloading maps, sports videos, news and restaurant recommendations, you can get digital “traffic jams”. Meanwhile, users are expecting faster and faster service.
Google found that if one website is 250 milliseconds slower than another website, then people will
visit it less often. This is why technology companies are now competing to be the fastest. Google said people do expect different things from different websites because they realize not all loading times are the same. For example, a person will be more patient waiting for a video clip to load than for a search result.
Even so, four out of five online users will click away if a video takes too long to load. This makes it difficult for video websites to choose between the quality of pictures and fast loading times. Pursuing a higher speed has always been part of the history of the Internet.
In the 1990s, when the World Wide Web first started to become popular, it was very crowded and slow; people called it the “World Wide Wait”. But engineers managed to fight the problem with new inventions. They laid a lot of fiber optic cables for high-speed transmissions; they improved software so it would work more smoothly; they placed computer servers all around the world to be nearer to users; all this increased speed.
Nowadays we can enjoy much faster Internet. Major search engines such as Google and Microsoft‟s Bing usually find search results in less than a second. But they will need to keep fighting to keep up with the developing demands of Internet users. 60. What does the report of The New York Times indicate? A. A millisecond is one thousandth of a second.
B. A millisecond has nothing to do with the Internet speed. C. A millisecond really makes a difference to the Internet users. D. 400 milliseconds is not so long for most Internet users.
61. Which of the following is NOT what engineers have done to improve the speed? A. Improving the quality of pictures on the Internet. B. Laying fiber optic cables for high-speed transmissions. C. Placing computer servers throughout the world. D. Making software work more smoothly. 62. What can be the best title of this passage? A. Don‟t make me “www.wait”. B. Search engines work faster. C. Traffic jams keep us waiting.
D. The World Wide Web becomes popular.
63. What‟s the writer‟s attitude towards the future of the Internet speed?
A. Confused. B. Disappointed. C. Confident. D. Discouraged.

ASK LASKAS
YOU'VE GOT QUESTIONS. SHE'S GOT ANSWERS.
Q: My problem is computer gaming. I do it day and night, averaging four hours of sleep. I can't control of this, and I don't know where to go for help. Do you?
—Player A: Dear Player,
You have an addiction. For some people playing video games releases dopamine, a powerful brain chemical that makes you feel good. You'd toss your cigarettes if you were ready to quit, right? To kick the habit, get help from a health professional. And don't look for help on line; that would be like an alcoholic going to the bar for advice.
Q: My brother's wife just had triplets(三胞胎). This is such a joy! Yet every time I share the news with co-workers, they ask me if she was on fertility pills. I think this is rude—or has society just become so talk-show numbed (麻木的)that you can ask anyone anything?
—No Show Host
A: Dear Host,
Yes. Our society has become increasingly disrespectful of privacy. But don't blame it all on the talk-shows. Continue to celebrate and greet impolite questions with stony silence. Their fertility history is nobody's business but their own.
Q: I work at an amusement park, and my manager steals supplies. She has a catering business on the side, and we've seen her load up her car at the back gates. The big bosses think she is the best thing since buttered bread, and we're all afraid that if we say anything, we'll lose our jobs. What can we do? —Righteous A: Dear Righteous,
Be sure you're right. You must have evidence about what and why things are going out the back gates. Once you know for certain, it's time to go to the bosses and report what you have seen.
Q: My stepson's wife sometimes leaves their eight-year-old home alone for \"a short run to the store.\" That may be an hour or so. I believe by law we should report it. What do you think? —The In-laws A: Dear Laws,
I don't know what the child-protection laws in your state are, but I do know that children need care and attention. This child may be able and unafraid, but kids aren't always careful. It also sounds like there is stress in your family relationship. One thing you can do to help this situation is offer to baby-sit when Mom needs to step out. . Which of the following statements is true?
A. Dopamine is a powerful brain chemical good to our health.
B. Looking for help on line is like getting help from a health professional. C. Player is a video game addict who smokes and sleeps few hours. D. Player is advised to stay clear of the screen. 65.According to the Q&A, _________ .
A. Host's coworkers care little about how others feel B. The talk-show is to blame
C. Somebody's business is everybody's D. Host's sister-in-law was on fertility pills
66.What we can infer from the Q&A is _________.
A. The Mom is not to blame because she needs a short run to the store B. Children need care and attention, though not for all of them C. Laws, the old lady, wants to report what she sees to the child's father D. Laskas doesn't seem to approve of Laws' trying to report what she sees
D
It was New Year‟s Night. An aged man was standing at a window. He raised his mournful (悲哀的)eyes towards the deep blue sky, where the stars were floating like white lilies(百合花) on the surface of a clear calm lake.
He had already passed sixty and brought from his journey nothing but errors and regrets. Now his health was poor, his mind vacant and his heart sorrowful.
The days of his youth appeared like dreams before him, and he recalled the serious moment when
his father placed him at the entrance of the two roads—one leading to a peaceful, sunny place, covered with flowers, fruits and filled with soft, sweet songs; the other leading to a deep, dark cave, which was endless, where poison flowed instead of water and devils and poisonous snake hissed ( 发嘶嘶声) and crawled (爬行).
He saw the lights flowing away in the darkness. These were the days of his wasted life; he saw a star fall from the sky and disappeared, and this was the symbol of himself. His regret like a sharp arrow struck deeply into his heart. Then he remembered his friends in his childhood. But they had made their way to success and were now honoured and happy on this night.
The high church clock struck and the sound made him remember his parents‟ early love for him. They had taught him and prayed for his good. But he chose the wrong way. With shame and grief he dared no longer look towards that heaven. His darkened eyes were full of tears, and with a despairing effort, he burst out a cry: “Come back, my early days!”
His youth did return, for all this was only a dream which he had on New Year Night. He was still young though his faults were real; he had not yet entered the deep, dark cave, and he was still free to walk on the road which leads to the peaceful and sunny land.
Those who still wander on the entrance of life, hesitating (犹豫)to choose the bright road, remember that when years are passed and your feet stumble (绊脚) on the dark mountains, you will cry bitterly, but in vain(徒劳): “ Oh youth, return! Oh give me back my early days!” 67. Why does the author set his story on New Year‟s Night? A. He wants to tell people it‟s time to recall the past. B. He suggests the aged man will have a bright future. C. He tries to stress(强调)the man‟s sad feeling. D. He expects people to share the man‟s sad feeling.
68. The aged man in the passage on New Year‟s Night can be described as _________. A. sorrowful, peaceful and regretful B. hopeful, sorrowful and peaceful C. regretful, painful and disappointed D. disappointed, regretful and hopeful
69. The author writes the passage mainly to _________. A. encourage young people to take the right road
B. help the old man to pick up his confidence C. describe the old man‟s unsuccessful experience D. show his sympathy for the old man
70. From the passage we can learn that_________.
A. the man returned from a long journey and regretted what he had done B. the man didn‟t enter the deep and dark cave when he was young C. the man was deserted by his parents when he was only a child D. the man found it no use crying over the wrong past

Many people think dreams are full of messages that may not be clear to us common people. But if we think about what is going on in our lives, we can usually come up with an answer. Let‟s look at some of the most common dreams. What do these dreams mean? Falling
You‟re falling, falling, falling… and then you wake up. This dream is said to mean you are afraid of something or worried about something. There may be something in your life that is out of control and there is nothing you can do to stop it. Another explanation is that you may experience failure in something. Maybe you‟re not doing well in school or work. Taking an exam(or forgetting that you have one)
You suddenly realize you have to take an exam at that very moment. You might be running here and there to find your classroom. Experts say this dream may mean you‟re being tested about something or maybe you are facing a challenge. Flying
Dreaming that you are flying means you are on top of things. You are in control of the things that matter to you. It may also mean you have confidence in yourself and think no one and nothing can beat you.
Trying to run, but going nowhere
You‟re trying to run, but either of your legs won‟t move or you simply aren‟t going anywhere.
Some experts think this dream means you‟re trying to do too many things at once and can‟t catch up or move forward.
In fact, unlike these dreams, there are also many strange dreams that experts may not be able to explain.

Online shopping has been gaining popularity in the recent years. But what are the advantages and disadvantages of it?
Obviously, online shopping has a number of advantages. To begin with, it‟s a convenient way to purchase goods. People can buy things without going out. Moreover, goods online are usually sold at lower prices than in conventional stores. Last but not least, you can see other customers‟ comments, which can help you make choices.
Nevertheless, as every coin has two sides, shopping online also has disadvantages. For one thing, it is very hard to tell whether the goods are fake or not. For another, customers lose some pleasure of shopping because they can‟t try or check the goods before buying them. Additionally, it‟s not safe to pay online. Your passwords can be stolen.
As for me, the advantages of online shopping outweigh its disadvantages. We should learn to make the best use of it and prevent losses.
